Pol Tonin is the experimental folk project of Vienna-born multidisciplinary artist Daniel Pabst (@daniel.pabst) —photographer and musician—whose restless creative practice has always moved between the rigorous and the intimate. “Dear Pol,” the first single from the forthcoming album “New Home,” marks the opening chapter of what promises to be Pabst’s most vulnerable artistic statement to date. The track blends his deep background in improvised music with a refined instinct for songwriting, recorded entirely by Pabst himself in his country house, which he transformed into a makeshift studio for the duration of the album’s creation.
“New Home” began as an abstract meditation on architecture—a natural entry point for an artist whose photography has long explored the tension between the universal and the deeply local, the placeless and the placed. But life intervened: the news of his wife’s pregnancy reshaped the entire project from the inside out. What started as conceptual became confessional. Old wounds, unresolved histories, the weight of what we carry into new chapters—all of it surfaced. “Dear Pol” carries this transformation in its bones, weaving field recordings and live instrumentation into something both spare and emotionally charged. Released on Protomaterial Records, the single announces an album about becoming: becoming a father, becoming honest, finding the courage to be fragile.
